Alone

"...behold, I am will you always, to the end of the age."
Matthew 28:20

I was looking for my favorite brand of healthy chips to go with the sandwich in my cart when a young woman came around the corner. She was talking into her cell phone while steering the grocery cart through empty aisles. At first I wondered if her stifled sobs were quiet chuckles, but then I saw her eyes were red-rimmed and puffy. She was crying into the phone saying: “Yeah, but I don’t want to have to do it alone!” Immediately my heart hurt for this young woman who couldn’t stop crying in the grocery store.

Alone. Oh, how I understood the feeling of being Alone.

I have been Alone so many times. Alone in a church service with people all around me. Alone in the mall while hunting for a perfect gift. And yes—I’ve been alone in the middle of the night, lying in the bed that I once shared with my snoring husband. But he wasn’t there any more, and never would be again.

I stood in the aisle, thinking about that young woman, holding back my own tears. She felt Alone. How could I possibly ignore her? I turned away from my cart and hurried to find that sobbing soul.

“Excuse me.” She was still holding the phone to her ear but didn’t seem fearful or bothered that I was speaking to her.

“You look like you need a hug.” I waited to see if she would pull back, but she didn’t.

“May I give you one?” She nodded silently, and I took her into my arms in a strong embrace, saying quietly into her ear: “I’m sorry you’re having a hard time.”

As I let her go she thanked me. I asked what her name was and said I would pray for her. I did pray for Kelsey several times that day and in the days that followed.

Alone. People everywhere—on the street, in busses and on airplanes. People in the malls and grocery stores, yet we still feel so Alone.

Jesus said: “I will never leave you, or forsake you.” What wonderful words of assurance that we can carry everywhere we go. He’s here. Jesus is HERE!

“You are never left alone when you are alone with God.” Woodrow Kroll

In Psalm 139 David spoke of the places where God is: In the depths of the seas and in the heights of the clouds. David didn’t know when he wrote those words that one day submarines would skim silently through the bottom of the sea, or airplanes would soar serenely through the skies. Yet he was sure that if he were ever there, God would be there too.

What words of ultimate faith David uttered. We could paraphrase his thoughts today: “If I ever go to the bottom of the ocean, or soar through the highest clouds, I KNOW God will be there!”

So many times sweet peace has swept my soul, enveloping me in a strong embrace as I have considered the assurance of God’s unending presence. He’s here! I can tell you confidently that God is present in the life of every believer. You are not alone. As surely as you know He has saved you from your sins, you can be sure of His continual presence.

So now my friend: GO! Go visit the sick, go buy the food, and go to bed in complete confidence that you are not alone. You can believe our Dear Lord, when He says He will never leave you or forsake you. He is HERE!
